Mexican Palm Trees, and Cocktails…

Palm trees means beach means sun means holiday, right? Right! Two weeks of Mexican mojitos, margaritas and caipirinhas (Brazil…?) and the odd whisky sour thrown in to balance all the sugar. FullSizeRender 20

I’ve become quite fond of palm trees over the last fortnight. Obviously the shade was very welcome for a white northern boy like me. But they also gave me something to photograph. Nice theme for a little series of sunny beach images…

I must admit that I took most of these in the early morning so that I could still hold the camera straight before indulging in all that cocktail malarkey. And palm trees help out even there – pretty ramrod straight, which sorts out the verticals. Apart from this one…? What happened this poor chap?

They’re pretty bendy too, which comes in useful when a tropical storm ruins the sun-bathing for a few days.

But perhaps the best thing about a palm tree is a coconut. Here’s young Freya, indulging in the palm tree’s fruit (although perhaps not with all the alcohol that I seem to throw in….)

Lazing in the summer sun

Once we managed to get away from the UK drizzle in August, we found, at last, the sun. And the colour changed from grey to blue, green and white – the summer colours.

And the breeze blew…

These are the best sorts of lazy days. Late breakfast, roll out to the pool, flop down with a book, a dip when it gets too hot, glass of cold crisp wine with lunch (at 3pm-ish) and then back to the pool for more lazing…

inviting?

blue and bluer

The pool is guarded by putti who are bleached white in the Spanish sun. Rather cute.

On guard.

Watching from one end of the pool.

And from the other. I wonder what they’ve seen over the years…

Here’s the view from the bedroom as the sun comes up.

the promise of another sunny day

the view round the headland

Good to remember the beautiful sunny delights of the Costa Brava where the sun warmed us up and prepped us for the cold misty Autumn that’s about to arrive…

Soaking up the view

Turkey – photographs from paradise…

What does paradise mean to you?

Beach Feet

For me, I love a mix of beach, culture, wine/beer (depending on how hot it is), fun for the kids, and a bit of excitement thrown in. All of these are readily available in Turkey. For Mrs Peck you need to add shopping, so that’s where we should start – in the market…

Kemal Ataturk welcoming us to the bazaar!

Must be a bargain here somewhere…

But enough of that! What about the culture, the history, the sights and the sites & the stories? Let’s start with the high-brow. Every evening we were plunged into Turkish delight, and I must admit – I really enjoyed it!

an ancient dance

Immy, not one to pass up a chance to show off, thought she could do better:

Dancer!!!

Once the evening culture had been fully appreciated, it was time to get up very early morning to beat the crowds to the classic culture. Ephesus, truly astounding, one of the Wonders of the Ancient World. Well, the Temple of Artemis to be precise. That’s crumbled, but no problem – there is still much to wonder at.

it’s HUGE!!!

I asked everyone what sort of Greek/Turk they would want to be. To my surprise, everyone said philosopher. So I got everyone to pose. I show these pix, not because of any artistic merit, but simply because it shows up the vanity of family and friends. Here goes:

Aha! Charles, The Thinker…

Immy. Started thinking, ended up dancing, again.

Mark – no thinking cap, thinking sunglasses!

Matthew – cut the bull, I’m a gladiator!

And me? Well, I’m an actor by heart. So I got into the, still fully functioning, theatre, and gave some impromptu Shakespeare (“Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears….”) much to the surprise of the Japanese tourists who had just arrived from the cruise ship…

This place is awesome, (in the correct sense of the word)

What a beautiful place! We were there in May, and the poppies were out. Colour and scent everywhere.

On the road, next to our hosts’ villa.

Can’t beat an olive tree for character.

So thank you to our good friends, the Aldersons, for inviting us to come over. And thank you to Turkey for being lovely, inviting, generous and exciting. Not a bad mix for Paradise…

Dusk at the beach

(And I haven’t even got to the sky-diving, safari water gun shoot out, steak eating competition, or Zeus’s cave…! A later blog, no doubt…)

Lazy Summer Sun Days

Ah, the summer is over. But what a summer! Those lazy hot long days relaxing by the pool on holiday. All fading into the past, but never to be forgotten. Here are some images to drift over when the mizzle closes in.

a pool in heaven

Italy is a good place to spend the summer. So we did. Mostly by the pool. Just gazing.

enjoy the view

This is the best pool that I’ve ever swam in. The view really did go on for ever, a true infinity pool. Exquisite detailing. Very Italian – what am I saying! It was Roman! I was just missing my toga!

don't you just want to go in...

This is what counts for exercise around Lake Trasimeno, Umbria…   Well, the summer sun days will have to last us till next year. Long live holidays!

hectic days before, hectic days after, but not today...
